Length looks like one of the simplest dimensions on a shaft or pin drawing, but many RFQ problems start here. Buyers may send only an overall length without saying which end is the datum, whether chamfers are included, or how the part will seat in the assembly. For custom shafts, dowel-style pins, stepped pins and replacement rods, a usable cut length specification helps the supplier choose the cutting route, inspection method and packing plan before issuing an inquiry-based quotation.
Define Where the Functional Length Starts and Ends
Do not assume that total length alone explains the functional requirement. Some shafts seat against a shoulder, some pins stop at a groove, and some replacement parts work only when one end projects a fixed amount after assembly. Buyers should identify which faces contact mating parts and which length actually controls fit.
If one end is more important than the other, mark a datum end on the drawing or sketch. This is especially useful when one side has a chamfer, radius, thread runout, cross hole or retaining feature that changes how the part is measured in production and inspection.
State Whether Chamfers, Radii and Burr Removal Are Included
A common sourcing mistake is to specify a cut length without saying whether the measurement includes edge break, chamfer or rounded ends. On pins and short shafts, a small chamfer can be enough to affect installation depth, cotter alignment or visible projection length after assembly.
If burr control matters, say so directly. Saw cutting, shearing, lathe cutting and secondary facing can all produce different end conditions. The best route depends on the diameter, tolerance, end-face requirement and order quantity, so the drawing should separate length tolerance from end-finish expectation.
Match Tolerance to the Real Assembly Need
Very tight length tolerance is not always the most important control point. For rotating shafts, straightness, runout or shoulder location may matter more than an extremely narrow overall-length window. For locating pins, hole position or working diameter may be more functional than decorative end consistency.
Buyers should tighten length tolerance only where the assembly truly requires it. An over-specified drawing can increase machining, facing and inspection work without improving performance. Include Packing and Identification for Mixed Sizes
Length-related mistakes often appear after production, not during machining. When a shipment contains several similar shafts or pins with close diameters but different cut lengths, weak carton labeling or mixed bundling can create receiving errors at the buyer's warehouse. If the parts support aftermarket service or line-side replenishment, packing identification should be part of the RFQ.
