Explain the Shaft or Pin Application
Tell the supplier whether the part works as a rotating shaft, fixed axle, hinge pin, locating pin, linkage pin, roller shaft or replacement component. Describe the mating bearings, bushings, seals, brackets or retention hardware. Application context helps identify which diameters, shoulders, holes and surface zones are functionally important.
State the operating environment, expected wear, corrosion exposure, vibration and maintenance method. Do not ask the manufacturer to invent load or safety requirements. For critical machinery parts, the buyer's engineer should approve the material, fits, heat treatment and tolerances used for production.
Prepare a Drawing with Fits and Tolerances
A shaft or pin drawing should include overall length, step diameters, shoulders, grooves, threads, chamfers, radii, flats and cross holes. Mark bearing seats, seal areas and locating surfaces. Use datum references and geometric tolerances when runout, concentricity, perpendicularity or hole position affects assembly.
Apply tight tolerances only where the function requires them. A general precision tolerance on every feature can increase grinding, inspection and scrap without improving the part. If the part replaces an existing component, provide mating dimensions and explain whether measurements came from a new sample or a worn part.
Specify Material, Hardness and Heat Treatment
Identify the steel grade or applicable material standard. Low-carbon, medium-carbon, alloy and stainless steels provide different combinations of machinability, strength, wear response and corrosion resistance. If equivalent materials are permitted, require the supplier to list the proposed grade for approval.
Where hardness matters, specify the target range, test scale and measurement location. Surface hardening and through hardening produce different property profiles. Heat treatment can change dimensions, so the process plan may require machining allowance, straightening, grinding or final dimensional inspection after treatment.
Define Machining and Surface-Finish Requirements
Clarify whether turned surfaces are acceptable or whether selected diameters require grinding or polishing. Surface roughness should be specified for functional areas such as bearing fits, seal contact and sliding surfaces. Non-functional zones may use a more economical finish.
Add thread type, pitch and tolerance; groove standard; cross-hole diameter and position; chamfer size; and any deburring requirement. For plated, black-oxide or passivated parts, identify masked areas and dimensional allowances. Confirm whether oil, rust protection or dry packing is required after finishing.
Use Samples and Inspection to Control Risk
A first article is useful for a new drawing, reverse-engineered sample or part with several mating features. Define the dimensions and documents that will be reviewed before approval. If the project requires a functional assembly test, describe the mating components and acceptance method.
Common inspection records include material certificates, dimensional reports, hardness results, thread-gauge checks, surface-finish readings and coating measurements. Agree on the document scope during quotation. Photos confirm general condition, but they cannot prove fits, runout or material properties.
Send a Complete Shaft and Pin RFQ
Include the drawing revision, application, material, heat treatment, hardness, dimensions, tolerances, surface finish, coating, prototype quantity, batch quantity and expected repeat demand. Add required certificates, sample approval, buyer part numbers, labeling and destination information.
