Start With the Real Corrosion Environment
Salt spray hours should not be copied from an old drawing without checking the actual working condition. Outdoor trailer hardware, agricultural machinery fasteners, coastal installation parts and warehouse-only support bolts do not face the same corrosion risk, even if they share similar dimensions.
Before asking for a test, buyers should describe whether the fastener will face rain, road salt, fertilizer, marine air, standing water or only indoor humidity. That context helps the supplier judge whether zinc plating, hot dip galvanizing, dacromet-style coatings or stainless steel should be reviewed first, instead of treating salt spray hours as the only decision point.
Know What the Test Can and Cannot Prove
Salt spray testing is useful for comparing coating systems under a standard accelerated condition, but it does not predict exact field life in a simple one-to-one way. A fastener that passes a certain number of hours in the lab may still perform differently depending on installation stress, coating damage during assembly, trapped moisture and maintenance conditions.
For that reason, buyers should use the test as one part of coating approval rather than the only acceptance rule. Coating type, coating thickness, thread fit, appearance expectation and packing protection still matter when the order is reviewed for quotation and production.
Define the Acceptance Logic in the RFQ
If salt spray testing is required, the RFQ should say which standard will be used, what the pass condition means and whether the requirement applies to red rust, white rust or another visible failure point. Without that detail, two suppliers may quote different coating routes while both claiming compliance.
It is also practical to state whether testing is needed for every batch, only for first-order approval, or only when the coating source changes. That decision affects lead time, inspection planning and how the supplier prepares pre-shipment documentation for overseas buyers.
Match the Test Request to Product Type and Process Route
Threaded fasteners need more than corrosion resistance on flat surfaces. Buyers should confirm that the selected coating and any salt spray target still allow acceptable thread fit after plating or galvanizing, especially for anchor bolts, U-bolts and threaded rods that must assemble smoothly with matching nuts.
Large bent fasteners, heavy galvanized parts and mixed assemblies may also need attention to coating coverage on bends, thread protection during packing and handling marks after export transport. In many cases, a useful RFQ combines coating type, test expectation, mating-part requirement, packing notes and the final application in one instruction set.
