How to Specify Cross-Hole Location for Custom Pins and Shafts

Cross holes look simple on a pin or shaft drawing, but they often create RFQ delays and assembly mistakes when the location is not defined from the right reference. A hole that is only one or two millimeters off can change cotter-pin fit, retaining clip position, linkage alignment or grease-flow direction. For overseas buyers sourcing clevis pins, drilled shafts, locking pins and custom machined rods, a clear cross-hole specification helps the supplier choose the machining route, inspection method and inquiry-based quotation logic before production starts.

  • Start by defining what the hole does in the assembly. A cross hole used for a cotter pin, spring pin, grease passage, locking wire or fixture stop should be reviewed according to that real function, not as just another general drilled feature.
  • Always locate the hole from a stable datum. On many custom pins, the best reference is one end face, a working shoulder or the center of a retaining groove. Without a clear datum, the factory may measure from the wrong end or from an unfinished edge condition.
  • State whether the location is measured to the hole centerline, the near edge or the far edge. Buyers often send a sketch that shows only a distance to the visible edge of the hole, but inspection and machining are usually controlled from the centerline.
  • Define hole diameter and fit expectation together. A cross hole that only needs a loose cotter pin may allow wider tolerance than a hole guiding a spring pin, dowel-style feature or safety wire with limited clearance.
  • If the part can be installed in two directions, explain hole orientation clearly. On some shafts and stepped pins, the hole must line up with a flat, keyway, grease channel or threaded end, so rotational orientation matters as much as axial location.
  • Include burr and edge-break requirements when the hole interacts with clips, wires or operator handling. Sharp burrs around a drilled hole can damage mating hardware, slow assembly and create misleading fit complaints after shipment.
  • Match the tolerance to the application instead of tightening the callout by default. For many industrial pins, hole position only needs to secure a retainer reliably, while the working diameter, shoulder position or groove width controls the true functional fit.
  • Tell the supplier if plating, heat treatment or secondary grinding happens before final inspection. Those steps may affect hole condition, visible burr, dimensional stability or the best stage for final verification.
  • For replacement parts, send both the old sample and the mating-part evidence when possible. Wear, field rework or hand drilling can shift the old hole location, so the receiving bracket, clevis, washer stack or locking method often gives better guidance than the sample alone.
  • Inspection should focus on the dimensions that actually decide assembly. A practical check package usually includes the hole diameter, hole-center distance from datum, orientation note if needed, burr condition and a photo showing the retainer or mating part installed.
  • When multiple similar pin sizes are ordered together, ask for packing labels that distinguish hole position or part revision, not only outside diameter and total length. Mixed service parts can be difficult to separate at the warehouse when the body looks almost identical.
  • A complete RFQ for a cross-hole pin or shaft should therefore include the drawing or marked sketch, datum reference, hole diameter, hole location, material grade, finish requirement, quantity, application and packing notes.
